Who we are

Thornguard wasn’t built as just another landscaping business. It was created out of deep respect for the land and a desire to give something back.

After years of working with invasive species across BC, I saw a pattern: blackberry was everywhere. It overtook trails, crowded out native plants, and slowly transformed vibrant landscapes into thorn-choked monocultures. What started as small patches became thousands of acres left untended, with little being done to stop it.

This company was founded with one clear purpose: to restore ecological balance. By focusing exclusively on blackberry removal, we direct our efforts where they matter most. Backed by hands-on experience and a deep understanding of the problem, we are committed to helping land heal and thrive.

Our work supports long-term biodiversity, native plant regeneration, and a healthier future for both wild and urban ecosystems. Whether you are a homeowner reclaiming your backyard or a city planner restoring public land, we are here to clear the way for something better.

We are here to provide care for the roots beneath our feet and the wings that keep our world alive.

Why we Don’t use herbicides

At Thornguard, we choose not to use glyphosate or chemical herbicides. That choice comes from firsthand experience and a commitment to protecting the ecosystems we work in.

After years of applying herbicides in agricultural and urban settings, I saw how these chemicals can move through soil, affect waterways, and harm more than their target. I have seen bees crawling through freshly sprayed brush, and it never sat right with me.

We acknowledge that herbicides have a place in invasive species management, especially at scale. But our goal is to reduce their overall use by offering an alternative that relies on hand removal, patience, and a deeper respect for the land.

Removing blackberry without herbicides is absolutely possible. It just takes more time, more effort, and more care.

We believe that is worth it.

The heart behind thornguard

We do this work because it’s the right thing to do. Blackberry might not be the biggest problem out there, but it’s a real nuisance for people and a serious threat to the land. Every time we clear it, we help both.

We take our time and do the job properly because we care about what we leave behind. It matters to us that native plants can grow back, that animals have room to return, and that people can actually enjoy their space again. We treat each job like it’s in our own backyard because one way or another it kind of is.

We didn’t start this business to save the world but we did want to make a positive impact. Turns out removing blackberry is a small way to do exactly that.
